United Way of Wyoming Valley - Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (GLR)Campaign for Grade-Level Reading is served through the following programs or partnerships: School Readiness: Keystone STARS is an initiative of the Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL) to improve, support, and recognize the continuous quality improvement efforts of early learning programs in Pennsylvania. Dolly Parton's Imagination Libary is a free book program. Each month a new, carefully selected book will be mailed in a child's name directly to their home. Programming will continue until the child turns five years old as long as you remain a resident of the Wyoming Valley. Should the child move outside the Wyoming Valley, he/she automatically exits the program. The Children's Book Drive is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. New and gently used children's books that will then be distributed to children in the Wyoming Valley. REAL MEN READ is a volunteer reading program that brings in MENtors from the Wyoming Valley community to read to kindergarten students for one hour each month to help foster early literacy. Literacy Kits are summer-themed reading kits for children ages 3 – 5 enrolled in Pre-K Counts classrooms across Wyoming Valley. The literacy kits contain age-appropriate books as well as a variety ofliter acy activities and helpful information for parents to keep children learning throughout the summer as they prepare to enter kindergarten. Turn the Page is an effort to introduce young learners to library services. Through this program, kindergarten and first grade students have access to the Osterhout Free Library’s Youth Librarian who visits the school library on a weekly basis and works to enhance what students are learning in the classroom. School Attendance: In honor of September’s Attendance Awareness Month, the United Way of Wyoming Valley hosts an annual poster contest from September 1st through September 30th which aims to raise awareness among students and parents about the importance of going to school every day. Students and their families complete the poster together, and a team of judges from the school select a winner from each grade. The Nurse’s Pantry provides at-risk students and families with access to commonly needed material items to address needs of an urgent nature. Pantry items include hygiene kits, lice kits, clothing and footwear. The Nurse’s Pantry will enable the nurse to directly assist struggling students and families, and in turn help reduce chronic absenteeism in early grade students. Attendance Awareness Campaign is a partnership with dozens of local out of school time and summer learning providers to distribute attendance awareness literature from Attendance Works to help shine a spotlight on the importance of good attendance and give parents the tips they need to prepare children for a lifetime of success. Summer Learning: The TAG IN awareness campaign is two-pronged program provided in partnership with United Way of Wyoming Valley, Wilkes-Barre Area School District, The Campaign for Grade Level Reading (C-GRL), and The Luzerne Foundation. The first priority is to ensure parents, especially those of elementary aged school children, understand why it is so critical to keep kids reading over the summer. The second goal, which is just as important, is to keep kids reading over the summer. The United Way Feed and Read Program utilizes a network of community centers and churches to provide lunch, half through the USDA Break Spot program and the other by utilizing their own center’s kitchen resources at many of the sites. In addition, United Way also has reading mentors who volunteer to provide one-on-one and group reading opportunities and encourage summer reading. Each child will receive reading-level appropriate books to keep in their personal library. LuzerneUnited Way of Wyoming ValleyUnited Way of Wyoming Valley
