Programs that use guided artistic expression or recreational activities, dietary management, hypnotherapy or other specialized interventions to improve the adjustment of individuals with mental, physical or developmental disabilities, substance abuse disorders, chronic health conditions or other problems. Supportive therapies are frequently auxiliary types of treatment used to facilitate other forms of therapy but may be also used for diagnostic purposes and are, on occasion, primary treatment modalities whose objectives are to foster health, communication and expression; promote the integration of physical, emotional, cognitive and social functioning; enhance self-awareness; and facilitate change.

Advocacy ServicesCommunity Support Program - A coalition of individuals, family members, mental health professionals, and other community members who are working together to help adults with serious mental illnesses and co-occurring disorders such as substance abuse live successfully in the community. It is part of a statewide coalition that began in 1984. Through the local CSP initiative, small seed grants to CSP, agencies, and advocacy groups have generated innovative trainings, wellness conferences, special events such as Christmas in July, the annual art show, anti-stigma campaigns, CSP celebrations and the production of a wide variety of literature. Through CSP, consumers have been empowered and have risen to leadership roles. Aging Advocacy - MHA provides advocacy services at the South Mountain Restoration Center to ensure the rights of individuals to receive the most appropriate services in the most appropriate setting are assured. SMRC is the only state owned nursing facility in PA. Community Advocacy - MHA provides advocacy services when community members who need assistance with getting appropriate or desired services feel they have exercised all options available to them. MHA is often able to achieve results through the use of mediation, negotiation or education about available services or applicable regulations.
