Friends' Central School - Trailblazer Day CampThe Trailblazer Day Camp is designed to accommodate the special interests of children between the ages of 6 and 12. The camper's day begins with 5 periods of activities with their group. Activities include instructional swimming, archery, art, drama, nature, crafts, sports and games. Campers are grouped according to grade and gender and are supervised by head and assistant counselors. Each group has a Home Base that serves as a gathering place to begin and end each camp day. Parent-Infant Center - After School ProgramThe After School Center at PIC serves children in grades K-6 who attend area public, independent or parochial schools. Our program offers time for homework assistance, outdoor free play, and a variety of special-interest clubs such as cooking, writing projects, carpentry, sports, arts and crafts, science and community service. We offer full-day care when children are released early and on school holidays. Holiday care often includes special activities or trips to nearby points of interest. Families may enroll for 2-5 days per week, or for school holidays only. In the 2009-2010 school year, we provide transportation from Greenfield, Penn Alexander, Powel, and St. Francis de Sales. Parent involvement is an integral part of the PIC community and all families who enroll agree to make an investment of time in the work that we do. The Parent Participation Program (PPP) volunteer requirement for families enrolled in ASC is 10 hours per year (6 hours for single parents). The After School Center is accredited by the National AfterSchool Association. Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial - Youth ProgramsFleisher's classes for young people provide training and creative and cultural experiences for children ages five to eighteen. Sessions are designed to foster learning, encourage individual expression, and provide arts appreciation and skill development in a wide range of disciplines. Our youngest students focus on tactile projects that introduce a range of materials and concepts. Older students focus on skill development, individual choice, and in-depth study of specific media. Our instructors are experienced teaching professionals in the arts. Drawing and Painting (ages 5 to 13) Children develop creative thinking processes while exploring a variety of mediums and techniques. Formal elements of color and design are introduced at age-appropriate levels. Mixed Media (ages 5 to 10) Young people explore contemporary techniques and materials to create three- two-dimensional pieces combining painting, drawing and sculpture. Formal elements of color and design are introduced at age appropriate levels. Sculpture (ages 7 to 18) Three-dimensional work allows young artists to expand their understanding of artistic concepts and techniques. Printmaking (ages 10 to 18) Drawing skills are expanded and developed through intaglio and relief printmaking techniques of collagraph, etching, monotype, linoleum, and woodcut. Art Foundations (ages 14 to 18, or by teacher recommendation) This class will provide teens with the basic skills needed for advanced classes. Focusing on the elements of art and design, drawing skills (use of line value, contrast, form, volume, perspective, and compostion) will be developed through exercises in direct observation. Oil Painting (ages 14 to 18, prior enrollment in Art Foundations required) This class will focus on advanced techniques in drawing, composition, color mixing, and painting with oils. Students will complete at least three pieces for their portfolio. Digital Photography (ages 14 to 18) Students will develop their photographic eye, and make images that tell stories while capturing their own point of view. Students will learn basic editing, manipulation, and printing of images through Photoshop® Elements. Teens must provide their own digital camera. Silkscreen (ages 11 to 13) In this introduction to screen printing, students will learn both photo and hand-drawn methods of silkscreen printing. Young people will have the opportunity to translate their artwork into a series of prints on paper or t-shirts. Cambodian Classical Dance (ages 6 to adult) This class teaches the ancient dance forms once practiced exclusively for the royal court of Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Court dance teaches the ancient stories of gods, demons, and heroes, and the symbolic meaning of gestures, costumes, and masks. The class requires stretching and exercises in breathing and balance.
