Theatre Horizon - EducationEducation: One-third of Theatre Horizon’s mission is dedicated to arts education because we believe that through arts education, children are given tools to grow as individuals, creatively, and as a member of a team. Theatre Horizon focuses its education program on the idea that theatre is not just a discipline, it is a way of harboring creativity, ingenuity, and lessons for both inside and outside the theatre. We offer education programs for a variety of age groups with the goal of both having fun and encouraging children to grow. Summer Camps: Theatre Horizon offers summer drama camps to children aged 7 to 12 in Montgomery County. Using their bodies, voices and imaginations, students create characters and work with others to write and perform their own show. Students engage in a variety of theatrical exercises including character development, storytelling techniques, movement, vocalization, and games that encourage creativity and teamwork. A final performance for parents and friends on the last day gives young actors a chance to showcase their imaginative creations in full costume! After School Drama Program: Theatre Horizon is excited to bring after-school drama classes to area elementary schools! Classes run weekly throughout the 2010-2011 school year for roughly 18 sessions and are specially designed for elementary school students of all levels, from beginner to budding stars. The Program: Theatre Horizon will coordinate a weekly after school drama class in your elementary school. Students will learn acting techniques, participate in creative activities that encourage personal growth and teamwork, and work towards presenting a full-scale production of a play by the end of the semester! Building on the success of the Ithan Elementary School Drama Program, Theatre Horizon is expanding to include other area elementary schools. Classes are held in the school auditorium and taught by Theatre Horizon's staff of trained and certified drama teachers. Why A major element of Theatre Horizon's mission is arts education. We believe that through the arts, children are given tools to grow creatively, both as individuals and as a member of a team. Theatre Horizon focuses its education program on the idea that active participation in dramatic activities is a way of nurturing imagination, ingenuity, and a love of the arts. How can my school participate? If you are interested in having your school participate in Theatre Horizon's After-School Drama Program, please contact Michael McElroy at Michael@theatrehorizon.org or call (202) 299-6648 Autism Drama Outreach Program: Using a variety of dramatic techniques, Theatre Horizon has developed a drama program that strives to inspire imaginary play and encourage interest in human relationships, which are some of the key challenges in children with autism. Our Goals: - To inspire imagination and flexible thinking - To help children find their own voice - To teach social skills in a fun and positive way Our Approach: Our program is influenced by many different types of therapies and programs for children on the autism spectrum. Using core principles of the Son-Rise approach, floor-time therapy as well as modified and un-modified acting lessons and activities for children, we provide a program that supports and loves each individual child for who he or she is. We discover each child's unique and individual motivations and build off of them, encouraging relationships and creative play. We often create custom-made games that cross the child's motivations with our goals for them. Along with teaching the basics of drama, we incorporate principles of the three E's (energy, enthusiasm and excitement!), non-judgment, acceptance and tons of encouragement. We are mindful that the kids we work with are kids! Therefore we try to be silly, fun and interesting to watch. We are the child's very active, energetic and imaginative play partner. Our underlying goal is to help the students feel good about themselves while engaging in dramatic play with an accepting and encouraging friend. Links to other Resources: The Autism Treatment Center of America, is the worldwide teaching center for The Son-Rise Program(R), a powerful and effective treatment for children and adults challenged by Autism, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), Asperger's Syndrome, and other developmental difficulties. The Son-Rise Program was originated in 1974 by parents, Barry Neil Kaufman (best-selling author, Son-Rise: The Miracle Continues) and Samahria Lyte Kaufman for their son. The treatment and educational model has changed the way children with Autism are helped worldwide. All Son-Rise Programs are designed especially for parents to teach parents how to effectively help and work with their children. MontgomeryTheatre Horizon - Montgomery; NorristownTheatre Horizon
