Mercy Neighborhood Ministries of Philadelphia - Before and After School Child Care ProgramsFor 18 years, Mercy Neighborhood Ministries has been providing children in the Tioga community with a safe, structured and caring environment rich with opportunities to help them grow, thrive, and reach their greatest potential. This allows their parents to work as well as to attend the classes provided that will enhance their employment status. The children that attend our programs are ages 4 through 12 years, African American, and from low-income families typically headed by single mothers. We offer homework, tutoring and enrichment services to the families in our neighborhood. Our goal is to create a positive and enthusiastic attitude toward learning by offering computer programs, educational field trips, and arts and craft activities that support the present school curriculum. The Program is able to encourage the development of fundamental learning skills that so many low- income, urban children have not been exposed to in school or in their homes. Children’s progress and program quality are systematically monitored with validated assessment tools. Teachers and Director together document program strengths, identify areas for improvement, and develop an appropriate professional development plan. Children are regularly observed to record their needs and interests, and teachers write daily lesson plans to support the development of individual children and the class as a whole. Systematic training is built around a consistent curriculum model.PhiladelphiaMercy Neighborhood Ministries - Philadelphia; NicetownMercy Neighborhood Ministries of Philadelphia

The students receive homework assistance and are offered the opportunity to participate in various enrichment programs consisting of computer learning, sports, arts and crafts, dance, self-esteem workshops and much more throughout the year. The students receive an award and prize for their efforts and accomplishments. We offer a Youth Council program for students ages 14 - 21. The Youth Council members develop leadership skills by utilizing their strengths and communication skills. By engaging in classroom activities, workshops, community service, event planning, fundraising and other activities, meant to engage and attract members of the community, as well as other organizations, students participate in and help the entire community. Sunrise of Philadelphia - Chester A. Arthur Out of School and After School Program - Philadelphia; Graduate HospitalSupporting children in building foundational academic skills, as well as creativity and self-expression. In addition to homework assistance and recreation, our out-of-school time programs offer literacy activities that bring reading alive and respond to students’ unique needs, especially the many English Language Learners (ELLs) in our program. Research shows that 3rd grade is when students go from learning to read, to reading to learn – making this time key to future academic success. Our middle school programs offer a safe, engaging and student-centered environment that helps youth build a strong sense of self and begin to explore future options. School attendance and grades in 6-9th grades are a strong indicator of students’ academic achievement and path after high school. Research also shows that exposing low-income students, especially first-generation college goers, to career possibilities and the college access process in middle school increases the likelihood of successful high school completion and post-secondary success. Sunrise helps prepare students for the transition to high school and have a support system to help them succeed in the long term.PhiladelphiaSunrise of Philadelphia - Chester A. Camp Spirit is conveniently located at 515 Jerusalem School Road (off of N. Sherman Street), just south of Mount Wolf. We host a wide variety of programming that will extend to archery, sling shots and digital photography. Well trained staff provides a safe environment to enhance the core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. Campers from ages 5-15 enjoy the summer with pool activities, arts & crafts, sports, games and much more. Five year olds must be exiting kindergarten or an all day program. LITs are campers 13-15 years old. In the past they have aided in the programming of the younger age groups (5-10 year olds). They have assisted with projects around camp as well as taken morning hikes to the local area of Codorus Creek, done devotional work with each other and spent time with each age group. Look for our new LIT program that we will be piloting during summer 2012. We will be taking the LITers to do community service as well as including them in the younger age groups to do supervised games and small lessons.
