Baker Industries - Workforce DevelopmentThe purpose of our 30-year old workforce development program is to instill a strong work ethic in our population of low-income vulnerable adults (people with disabilities, former substance abusers, ex-offenders, and homeless people) and, in doing so, build their self-esteem and work skills to the point where those who are able are ready to move into the real workforce. Through such vehicles as our temporary employment program, we have been able to help an average of 67 individuals each year to do just that - 67 individuals who become one step closer to becoming independent and productive members of their communities. For those who are unable to be mainstreamed, we provide long-term employment at one of our two work sites (Malvern and Philadelphia). Each year, depending on the level of work that is outsourced to us, we touch between 200 and 400 individuals. Approximately 60-70% of our revenue comes from the work that we do for our customers - the rest we raise privately. We believe there is no other organization in this country that does what we do, i.e., blending these four, very different types of individuals in a work rehabilitation program, and doing it without any government support. Brian's House - Client Employment ServicesWe help people with disabilities maximize their successes in the world of work. Based in the Downingtown Business Center, Brian's House Enterprises (BHE) provides employment training to adults with mental retardation, autism spectrum disorders, brain injury, and other disabilities. Individuals served may be incontinent or require mobility assistance. BHE services include: - comprehensive vocational assessment; - supportive, competency-based pre-vocational, vocational, and psychosocial skill development; - supervised workshop employment; - community-based supported employment. Based upon the needs and choices of an individual, BHE services may include job development, job skill training, workshop or community job placement, and extensive work adjustment coaching. We provide nursing coverage at our workshop, fully accessible facilities, implementation of services recommended by OT's and PT's, and positive approach behavior management procedures. Vocational Rehabilitation ServicesThe Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, or OVR, provides vocational rehabilitation services to help persons with disabilities prepare for, obtain, or maintain employment. OVR provides services to eligible individuals with disabilities, both directly and through a network of approved vendors. Services are provided on an individualized basis. The OVR counselor, during face-to-face interviews, assists customers in selecting their choice of vocational goals, services and service providers. An Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE) is developed, outlining a vocational objective, services, providers and responsibilities. Certain services are subject to a Financial Needs Test (FNT) and may require financial participation by the customer. Counseling and guidance, diagnostic services, assessments, information and referral, job development and placement, and personal services such as readers or sign language interpreters are provided at no cost to the individual. Also, by law OVR customers receiving Social Security benefits for their disability (SSI, SSDI) are exempt from OVR’s Financial Needs Test. Statewide there are 21 District Offices staffed with trained, professional Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors which serve Pennsylvania in all 67 counties. The Hiram G. Andrews Center in Johnstown provides vocational training and comprehensive rehabilitation services to people from across the state. OVR’s Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services also provides specialized services to blind and visually impaired individuals. These services are designed to increase an individual’s independence and employability. Workplace & EmploymentAAPD is committed to improving employment outcomes for the many people with disabilities who are not working but are ready, willing and able to work. We promote legislation and policy that promotes opportunities for people with disabilities, partner with employers to improve business practices and develop mentoring programs, and offer career opportunities to students and recent graduates with disabilities. Internships: Internships are invaluable professional development tools and can open doors that education alone cannot. In the best programs, interns receive hands-on work experience and mentoring, which prepare them to succeed in the workforce. Disability Mendoring Day: The AAPD’s Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) program connects nearly 13,000 students and job seekers with disabilities to thousands of employers each year. The 2011 events took place in over 200 locations across the country. DMD, held the third Wednesday in October, promotes career development through hands-on programs, job shadowing, and ongoing mentoring.
