- A parent may leave their child at the hospital
- Hospital employees will not ask parents for ID, but parents may provide information willingly. Parents are given an opportunity to provide information if they desire by talking with hospital staff or filling out and anonymously returning the medical information form found at the bassinette sites
- Criminal charges will not be filed if the newborn shows no sign of abuse or neglect
- Baby's mother or father has a specified amount of time to reclaim a baby through the county's child protective services
- If a parent does leave their name with the hospital, county agencies are required to try to locate the baby's next of kin. CYA has been charged to do this, so a family member may have the opportunity to reclaim and parent the baby
- Some hospitals provide bassinettes near their emergency department's entrance, but an employee should be notified when a parent leaves a baby. This can be accomplished by ringing an emergency button at the ER door or by the Safe Haven bassinette
- After a parent leaves a baby at a hospital Safe Haven, the newborn will be examined by hospital staff and then a county agency is notified to place child in foster care
- Babies eventually are placed in adoptive homes
