General Information
Description of ServiceVA Pittsburgh Healthcare System offers inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care in the Consolidation Building at University Drive.

Inpatient units provide a multidisciplinary approach with medicine, psychiatry, nursing and social work services. This treatment team meets daily to discuss new needs, presenting barriers to treatments, medication changes and the treatment plan. Individual time is spent with each veteran specific to each discipline. During time on the acute impatient units, a veteran will receive treatment that is diagnosis specific.

Mood disorders, anxiety and co-occurring substance abuse are treated on the 4th floor, which specializes in the recovery model. The 5th floor focuses on schizophrenia and thought disorders.

While on the units, veterans benefit from various modalities of treatment such as group programming and specialized interventions from psychology and nursing teams. Workbooks are provided for recovery-focused care pertaining to drug and alcohol and other specific diagnoses. Social work assists as part of the treatment team, facilitating appropriate care plans, brokering between programs, assisting with therapeutic goals and arranging appropriate level of care and follow up. Social work assists with drug and alcohol evaluations, family interventions, community and VA referrals for programming. Social work often interacts with other VA facilities in VISN-4 in order to determine appropriate in home services and programming that may be able to meet a veteran’s specific needs. On occasion, veterans may require longer term care. Those veterans are referred to the 3rd floor for extended psychiatric treatment.

Veterans discharge from the inpatient units to many levels of care, some of which are home, residential programming, drug and alcohol treatment centers, nursing homes, and group or personal care home living.
