Description of Service
The Joseph J. Peters Institute treats children and adolescents (ages 3-19) who have been sexually abused or are presenting developmentally inappropriate sexual behaviors. Services are provided through a group of clinicians trained in issues of sexual abuse and can include: initial psychological evaluation; psychiatric evaluation; individual, family, and/or group psychotherapy; and ongoing medication management, if necessary.
The initial evaluation includes clinical interviews of parents/caregivers and the child, along with behavioral observation and specialized psychological testing to identify difficulties in functioning. The purpose of the evaluation is to define the client and family’s strength and weakness as well as identifying the specific problems that the child is presenting. This evaluation process results in a detailed set of recommendations for the child’s treatment and involvement of the family in the treatment process.
