Description of Service
Main Line Art Center is committed to extending the visual arts to a broad audience through the following community outreach programs:
Special Needs Sundays: Taught at the Art Center by instructors experienced in working with individuals with special needs and assisted by volunteers from the community. These classes are designed for children and teens (6-18 years) with special needs, including physical and cognitive problems. Classes are structured for small groups with one-on-one assistance, and are designed not only to heighten sensitivity to the arts, but also to also encourage and build physical, cognitive, and social skills.
Creating in Clay: Held at Delaware County Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Classes include projects that use tactile mediums such as clay and mosaics. This program provides students the opportunity to develop their senses and gain confidence and independence.
Project H.O.M.E. After-School Arts Enrichment: In partnership with Project H.O.M.E., the Art Center provides an after-school arts enrichment program every Friday during the academic year for children living in Philadelphia’s Strawberry Mansion community. The program serves children in grades 2 through 4 and augments the education-based assistance Project H.O.M.E provides for the students. The arts programming is another way to meet the needs of at-risk youth and to enable them to remain connected to caring adults in a creative and nurturing environment.
CareLink: In partnership with CareLink Community Support Services, the Art Center provides workshops at Carelink residences in papermaking, silk screening, polymer clay jewelry, and painting for adults diagnosed with mental illnesses, physical disabilities, and other developmental challenges. These art workshops teach CareLink consumers a variety of techniques that instill a sense of pride and accomplishment, as well as strengthen critical thinking and problem solving.
Library Projects – Throughout the summer, Main Line Art Center travels to local libraries to conduct one-hour art workshops with community members. The projects range in topics from year to year, and complement the national summer reading theme.
