Description of Service
Abington Police have launched a unique Crime Prevention Campaign to help stop an increasing problem of thefts of items left in vehicles. Index cards were designed to alert the community of a problem that is plaguing Abington Township and to inform citizens about what they can do to help stop this type of crime. Officers on patrol are being issued the cards so that during their patrols they can place them on windshields of cars which they find unlocked or that have valuables in plain view. The officers will also attempt to secure the vehicles. Abington Police have seen a large increase in this type of crime. There have been over 100 of these incidents which were reported to police so far this year and many more incidents that occurred but which were not reported. Abington is not alone in this problem and communities throughout the Delaware Valley and beyond are reporting similar increases in these types of crimes. Some of the items reported stolen were valuables such as pocketbooks, wallets, laptop computers, iPods, GPS Devices, cell phones and other such items that should NEVER be left visible in a vehicle whether locked or unlocked.
