Description of Service
Mentally gifted students in grades K-5 are served by an itinerant gifted support teacher through a pull-out program within the child’s home school. The academic program is built around themes with a focus on thinking skills. Some of the themes explored include Knights and Castles, Architecture, Mystery and Inventions. The program’s goal is to develop higher order thinking capabilities including analysis, synthesis and evaluation skills. In addition to the pull-out program, mentally gifted students are served by regular education teachers who, through collaboration with the gifted support teacher, provide differentiation of instruction as needed. It is the fundamental purpose of the Coatesville Area School District to provide mentally gifted students with the opportunity to move beyond the routine acquisition of knowledge; to examine the relationships among different areas; or to delve deeply into a few areas. The intent of our program is to challenge students to explore new areas of thinking and responding and to provide a sequence of experiences designed to promote continuous fulfillment of the potential of the gifted student.
