Public Housing: Federal program that provides decent and safe rental housing assistance for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Residents pay no more than 30% of their adjusted gross income for rent and basic utilities.
Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8): This program helps families afford safe, decent and sanitary rental housing that is available through private landlords. Eligible families are given a Voucher, which can be used to rent a house or an apartment from a participating landlord. Under the Voucher Program, the tenant will pay at least 30% and no more than 40% of their adjusted gross monthly income in rent at initial lease-up. The Authority pays the remainder of the negotiated rent. The payment goes directly to the Landlord under a Housing Assistance Payments Contract. Included in this program is the Single Room Occupancy Program.
Turnkey Lease / Purchase Program: The Authority offers a program that is a unique opportunity for first time homebuyers. The lease purchase program offers eligible tenants the ability to become homebuyers of their own unit by participating in a workshops and a rent payment set-aside initiative that helps families save up for down payment and closing costs after two years of program participation. Interested families agree to attend homebuyer training classes and learn about long term costs and obligations that ownership means.
The Housing authority also helps to manage housing units at York Towne House, Village court, Waverly court and the Homes at Thackston Park
