Description of Program
The American Legion is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization with great political influence perpetuated by its grass-roots involvement in the legislation process from local districts to Capitol Hill.
Focusing on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities, The American Legion currently has about 2.4 million members in 14,000 posts worldwide. The Legion has a broad range of programs for Family, Youth, Community and National Affairs.
The American Legion is the nation's largest veterans wartime service organization. The services provided include help with VA claims, assistance in finding employment, support for current members of the military, and financial advice.
The Legion has touched virtually every facet of American life; our objective is to serve our community, state and nation. The American Legion also conducts many programs designed to benefit the youth in our communities. Some of these programs include: American Legion Baseball, Keystone Boys State, High School Oratorical Contest, Essay Contest, Junior Shooting Sports Program, Scouting and State Police Youth Week.
We are a powerful voice for veterans in Washington, DC; The American Legion drafted the original GI Bill and was instrumental in establishing the federal agency that today is the Department of Veterans Affairs.
National Headquarters for The American Legion is in Indianapolis, Indiana, with an additional office in Washington, DC. The Department of Pennsylvania’s Headquarters is located in Wormleysburg, PA.
The American Legion Family includes The American Legion Auxiliary, The Sons of The American Legion and The American Legion Riders. Together we work hand in hand united in patriotism and working for veterans advocacy.
