General Information
Description of AgencyRecruiting, training and supporting volunteers to become court appointed special advocates. Volunteers are appointed by the Court in Crawford County to advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children.
MissionCrawford County CASA, Inc., under professional leadership, trains and provides citizen volunteers to advocate for the best interests of children who are involved in juvenile court proceedings primarily as a result of abuse and/or neglect. These volunteers conduct an independent investigation, establish working relationships with all involved parties and services, report their findings and recommendations to the court, and help monitor compliance with family service plans and court orders. Crawford County CASA is dedicated to ensuring that children have a safe, permanent and nurturing home in the shortest time frame possible.
HistoryThe goal of the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program is to prevent abused and neglected children from becoming lost in the Juvenile Dependency System by advocating for their best interest and monitoring the activities and progress of a child’s case.

CASA was founded in 1977 by Seattle Judge David Soukup. Judge Soukup wanted to ensure he was getting all the facts pertinent to the child before making placement decisions. In 1984, the National CASA Association was established to unify and promote the national network of CASA programs and to strengthen the professionalism of its members in their responsibilities as child advocates.

Crawford County began the process of developing a program in 1993 when volunteers formed a steering committee to work with the Juvenile Court and local agencies to establish a viable CASA program for the county. In February 1994, Crawford County CASA was incorporated as a Pennsylvania non‐profit public benefit corporation.
