Description of Agency
YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School is a 501(c)(3) organization with over 25 years of experience helping young people reclaim their futures through education and vocational training. Our unique program provides former high school dropouts with a chance to earn their diplomas while learning vital job skills and providing valuable community services in just one year. After graduation, alumni receive one additional year of support as they continue into employment and/or post secondary education opportunities.
YouthBuild Philadelphia currently employs more than 60 dedicated teachers, instructors, case managers, and administrators to help students navigate their way through the program and transition to full-time jobs and post secondary educational programs. Our school has three core values: Excellence, Respect, and Perseverance. We firmly believe that our students contain the brilliance, talent and motivation to create a successful leadership pathway for themselves and positively impact their communities.
The mission of YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School is to provide out-of-school youth in Philadelphia with the broadest range of tools, supports and opportunities available to become self-sufficient, responsible and productive citizens and leaders in their community.
In 1991, there was an urgent need to address the issue of out-of-school youth in Philadelphia. The dropout rate in the city's public schools hovered at 50%, and there were few job training opportunities available for young people without diplomas. With the support of a group of community representatives, YouthBuild Philadelphia began – in a single-room school with 28 students – based on Dorothy Stoneman’s YouthBuild USA Model (learn more at www.youthbuild.org). Now in its 26th year, YouthBuild Philly has granted more than 2,600 high school diplomas to young people from across Philadelphia, and impacted thousands of lives through our commitment to community service and workforce development.
