General Information
Description of AgencyACHIEVEability was founded in 1981 by Sisters of Mercy, business executives and professionals, and homeless women concerned about the future of low income, single-parent families living in homeless shelters or substandard conditions. They recognized that these families needed decent affordable housing and comprehensive support over time if they were to move from welfare dependence to economic independence. Previously known as Philadelphians Concerned About Housing (PCAH), we changed our name in 2004 to ACHIEVEability in order to better reflect the comprehensiveness of our services and operations in housing development, property management, human services, and community and economic development. Starting with our first four homes donated by Mercy Hospital of Philadelphia, we have since developed 206 housing units and continue to manage 156 of these for the use of the families participating in the ACHIEVEability Family Self-Sufficiency Program. In 1999, we opened our computer learning center. In 2000, we started an after school program. In 2003, we co-developed a neighborhood wireless network and digital inclusion program. In 2004, we co-led a resident-driven neighborhood strategic planning project. In 2006, we started complementing our family-based program with information and referral services and community organizing for the neighborhood at large.
